Utilities Against Slavery

Utilities Against Slavery (UAS), facilitated by the Slave-Free Alliance, is a collaborative forum uniting energy, water, and gas providers to tackle the issue of modern slavery within their industries. Established in March 2020, UAS was created to develop a coordinated, sector-specific approach that drives real change across the utilities sector.

Utilities Against Slavery

Utilities Against Slavery is a forum for energy, water and gas providers to collaborate to prevent and address modern slavery.

Today, UAS brings together 14 leading utility providers, representing electricity, gas, and water services. Collectively employing over 100,000 people and managing a combined supply chain spend of approximately £15 billion, UAS members are uniquely placed to detect and address modern slavery risks within their operations and supply chains. Meeting regularly throughout the year, the group is supported by the social enterprise Slave-Free Alliance and led by independent chair Gary Booth, a former Detective Chief Inspector with West Midlands Police, who was involved in rescuing over 300 victims of modern slavery during the Operation Fort investigation.

UAS members actively collaborate on initiatives such as enhancing modern slavery training, strengthening supply chain due diligence, and developing sector-specific resources.

Recent projects include:

  • The creation of new training tools, including a toolbox talk and multilingual ‘Spot the Signs’ posters

  • The publication of practical guidance documents on conducting site and supplier assessments, and following a workshop, a guide on how to respond to an incident of modern slavery in a business

  • The launch of targeted workstreams designed to embed anti-slavery practices deeper into procurement and operational processes

The Waste & Recycling Modern Slavery Working Group

The Waste & Recycling Modern Slavery Working Group raises awareness of modern slavery and develops solutions for mitigating the risks that the whole industry sector faces.

With its frequent use of temporary labour and the nature of its business operations, the waste and recycling sector is actively targeted by traffickers and is high-risk to modern slavery practices.

Between 2015 and 2017, of all the modern slavery victims helped by our parent organisation Hope for Justice, more than two-thirds of them had spent at least some time in exploitation at waste and recycling facilities.

To address these issues, the Working Group actively raises awareness of the risks of modern slavery via the #WasteSectorSaysZero to modern slavery campaign and other public-facing initiatives.

The Waste & Recycling Modern Slavery Working Group has 18 member businesses which span contracting, management, logistics, exporting of waste, textiles, paper, plastic, e-waste, metals and more.
